Wike Sets Up Panel To Investigate Death Of One Chance Victim

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has launched an investigation into the death of a woman, Greatness Olorunfemi, who reportedly died within the premises of the Maitama District General Hospital, Abuja due to negligence.

The Mandate Secretary of Health Services and Environment, Adedolapo Fasawe, on Thursday inaugurated a 9-member independent investigative panel on behalf of the minister to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of the young woman.

Fasawe also disclosed that the Health Services and Environment Secretariat has concluded plans to commence a mortality review in FCT health facilities with the aim of reinvigorating the process.

He said it is a new dawn where accountability and transparency will be brought to bear in healthcare service delivery in the FCT.

While inaugurating the probe panel, Fasawe said the unfortunate death of the one-chance cab victim is not only unacceptable but should serve as a catalyst to proffering enduring solutions to the issues generated by the incident.

He disclosed that the panel will be submitting it’s report in one week.

The terms of reference of the panel include ascertaining the clinical status at the time of arrival of the patient and any progression to and until death; determining the role of parties in the matter of Ms Greatness Olorunfemi and her unfortunate death; and making recommendations for similar situations like this case.

He said: “The process of appointing and constituting a 9-person panel to investigate the death of late Ms Greatness Olorunfemi’s death is a crucial step in ensuring transparency and accountability in healthcare systems.

“This investigation serves multiple purposes, such as providing closure to the patient’s family, identifying any potential malpractice or negligence, and implementing necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
