The English Premier League has provided clarification on why West Ham United did not receive a penalty in the first half of their match against Chelsea in Saturday’s early kick-off.
Despite conceding two early goals to Nicolas Jackson within the opening 18 minutes of the game, West Ham were not awarded a penalty that could have potentially reduced the deficit and opened the game.
In the 28th minute, there was an incident where Wesley Fofana appeared to drag Crysencio Summerville back inside the penalty area. Although the contact was initiated outside the box, it seemed to continue before Summerville fell to the ground.
Referee Samuel Barrott waved play on, and the decision was upheld by the Video Assistant Referee to the disappointment of the home fans. 
The Premier League took to their official X page to clear up the confusion, stating: “The referee’s decision of no penalty for the challenge by Fofana on Summerville is checked and confirmed by VAR – deeming that this was not sustained holding.”
Recall that the game ended in a 3-0 victory in favour of Chelsea thanks to Cole Palmer’s 47th-minute strike as West Ham United continued to struggle under the leadership of their new manager, Julen Lopetegui.
