Controversial rapper Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington and Akpi, has been granted bail after spending nearly a month in police custody.
The news was confirmed by his lawyer, Stanley Alieke, who shared the update on his Instagram handle on Monday, stating,
“Apki has been granted bail by the court,” without providing additional details.
Speed Darlington was arrested on November 27 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State.
His arrest was reportedly linked to alleged remarks about Nigerian music star Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy.
Another of Darlington’s lawyers, Deji Adeyanju, accused Burna Boy of orchestrating the arrest.
The controversy stemmed from Darlington’s public criticism of Burna Boy’s association with embattled American rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently facing allegations of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
Despite his legal troubles, Speed Darlington has maintained his stance, vowing not to relent in his criticism of the Grammy award-winning artist over his ties to Diddy.
Earlier, Adeyanju announced that a court ruling had ordered Darlington’s arraignment within 48 hours or his release on bail.
“Our FREP application for Speed Darlington has been granted. He is to be arraigned within 48 hours or released. Justice may take time, but it will always prevail,” he said.
