President Buhari Reacts To Benue Tanker Fire Explosion

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the government and people of Benue State on the fuel tanker explosion, which resulted in the loss of several lives.

Naija News recalls the explosion occurred on Monday in Ahumbe village of Benue along the Makurdi – Aliade road.

In his reaction, the president, according to a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina on Tuesday, expressed sadness over the unfortunate loss of lives, which he said could clearly have been avoided.

Ruga Settlement: Federal Government Has No Land In Benue State, Ortom Says

The Benue state government has asked the federal government to show proof of the lands it claims to have in all the thirty-six states of the federation.

Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom who raised the question yesterday insisted that the state government had already made known its stand on the Ruga settlements matter.

He noted that the state would not be part of the project and urged the Federal government to publicly tender documents of the claimed gazetted lands in Benue State to put the matter to rest.

Scores Feared Dead, Several Injured As Tanker Explodes In Benue

Many road users, not excluding residents were feared killed on Monday in after a tanker loaded with petroleum products went up in flames in Ahumbe village on the Alliade/ Makurdi Federal Highway in the Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

Naija News understands that the tanker was said to have flamed up after it fell off the road in the process of the driver trying to avoid potholes on the road.

An eyewitness identified as Austin Nembe revealed that the tanker was coming from the eastern part of the country and was heading towards Makurdi when it fell at Ahumbe.The witness revealed that residents were killed as a result of the ignorance on the part of the government for neglecting the road unrepaired.

FRSC Confirms 37 Dead, Says More Are Likely To Die After Benue Tanker Fire
Death toll from the Benue tanker explosion has increased to 37, Aliyu Baba, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Benue State confirmed yesterday.

The FRSC Commander also noted that 101 persons were injured in the Monday’s tanker explosion in Ahumbe village along the Makurdi-Aliade-Otukpo Road in Gwer East Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the 101 people have been taken to different hospitals across the state as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.

Baba told newsmen in Makurdi that the death toll might be higher as some of the victims were currently in critical conditions in more than eight hospitals spread across Makurdi and Alaide in Gwer East LGAs respectively.

In the same vein, Chief Medical Director of the Benue State Teaching Hospital, Dr Terlumun Swende, said 10 victims of the fire incident were brought to the hospital on Monday.
