The prevalence of traffic offenses among commercial drivers and public figures, including celebrities, is increasing in Nigeria and across the globe.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), numerous traffic offenses and their corresponding penalties are outlined under Section 10(4) and 28(2) of the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007, and Regulation 220 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR), 2012.
Naija News learnt that these violations encompass a range of infractions including overloading, failure to assist road accident victims, disregarding learner driver regulations, engaging in commercial activities like preaching or hawking while driving, and ignoring traffic lights and signs.
Additional offenses listed include seat belt negligence, exceeding speed limits, underage driving, unauthorized use of sirens, and using mobile phones while driving.
Here are examples of 37 common traffic violations and their associated fines:
1. Dangerous Driving – ₦50,000
2. Fleet Operation Violation – ₦200,000
3. Medical Personnel Or Hospital Rejection Of Road Accident Victim – ₦50,000
4. Inadequate Construction Warning Sign – ₦50,000
5. Failure To Report Road Crash – ₦20,000
6. Operating A Vehicle With Forged Documents – ₦20,000
7. Overloading – ₦10,000
8. Driver’s Licence Violation – ₦10,000
9. Passengers’ Manifest Violation – ₦10,000
10. Preaching Or Hawking In Commercial Vehicle – ₦50,000
11. Failure To Install Speed Limiting Device – ₦3,000
12. Instructors Permit And Training Violation – ₦2,000
13. Obstructing Marshal On Duty – ₦2,000
14. Failure To Cover Unstable Materials – ₦5,000
15. Latching And Twist-Locks Violation – ₦5,000
16. Operating Mechanically Deficient Vehicle – ₦5,000
17. Failure To Fix Red Flag On Projected Load – ₦3,000
18. Failure To Move Over – ₦3,000
19. Projected Load In Excess Of Prescribed Limit – ₦3,000
20. Road Marking Violation – ₦5,000
21. Speed Limit Violation – ₦5,000
22. Route Violation – ₦5,000
23. Child Restraint Violation – ₦3,000
24. Child Sitting Position Violation – ₦3,000
25. Construction Area Speed Limit Violation – ₦3,000
26. Caution Sign Violation – ₦3,000
27. Fire Extinguisher Violation – ₦3,000
28. Learners Driving Regulation Violation – ₦3,000
29. Light/Sign Violation – ₦2,000
30. Ascertainment Of Weight Violation – ₦2,000
31. Do Not Move Violation – ₦2,000
32. Driving Right–Hand Steering Vehicle – ₦3,000
33. Driving Under Alcohol Or Drug Influence – ₦5,000
34. Driving With Expired/Without Spare Tyre – ₦2,000

The FRSC also specifies that a custody fee of ₦200.00 per day applies to impounded motor vehicles and motorcycles/tricycles, payable after an initial 24-hour grace period.
To settle fines, individuals are required to deposit the specified amount into the Federal Government Revenue Account at any commercial bank or online via the Remita platform (accessible through http://www.remita.net).
A teller or printout of the transaction must then be presented to the FRSC office where the offense was booked.
