Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has commended Labour Party (LP) chieftain, Doyin Okupe over the call for unity and support for President Bola Tinubu amidst the Niger Republic coup.
Naija News reported that Tinubu had officially briefed the National Assembly on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)’s proposed military action and other penalties against the coup plotters in the Niger Republic.
Tinubu, in a letter on Friday, informed the upper chamber that sanctions, including freezing utility services and closing land borders with the Niger Republic, were imposed on the neighbouring West African country at an emergency meeting after its coup.
Doyin Okupe, in a series of Twitter posts, said Nigerians and political elites must collectively rise to support Tinubu amidst the internal difference resulting from the 2023 election.
Reacting to this, Reno said he is impressed that Okupe can openly speak against the opinion of many LP supporters and call for unity behind President Tinubu.
He noted that it would also be right if Peter Obi will be patriotic enough rather than partisan and publicly condemn his supporters who are abusing the freedom of speech and also calling for a military coup in Nigeria.
He wrote: “I am very impressed that a prominent Obidient, like Doyin Okupe, can come out openly against the mainstream opinion of his movement and call for unity behind Nigeria’s President for the purpose of defending any threats to Nigeria and the defence of democracy in the Niger Republic.
“Perhaps Peter Obi will himself be patriotic rather than partisan and publicly condemn those in his movement who are abusing their freedom of speech by openly calling for a military coup in Nigeria and trying to undermine our government by supporting the action of the putschists.
“It is hoped that these Obidients can understand that if they were in Burkina Faso and Mail, where the military has toppled democratically elected governments, they would not have had the opportunity to mouth off against their government as they are currently doing. In Mali, social media influencers have been imprisoned for criticising the junta. But in Nigeria, these compatriots are benefitting from the democracy that they are threatening”
