Presidential Election: Oyo APC, PDP Spokesperson Speaks On Makinde Contesting In 2027

As the political landscape for the 2027 presidential election begins to take shape, a campaign advocating for Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to contest for the presidency has surfaced.

This movement, led by a group known as ‘Progressive Youth for Makinde Presidency 2027,’ is gaining traction in Ibadan and across social media platforms.

The campaign kicked off in June 2024, with the establishment of dedicated social media accounts on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), specifically pushing for Makinde’s candidacy.

According to Punch, the Facebook account was created on June 17, and the X account followed on June 3.

These platforms have been actively promoting Makinde’s leadership qualities and governance achievements, positioning him as a viable contender for the highest office in Nigeria.

One prominent supporter, Olamilekan Kehinde, expressed confidence in Makinde’s capability, stating, “Governor Seyi Makinde has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and a commitment to good governance, making him fit for the presidency of Nigeria compared to the current President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.”

Despite the growing support, there have been mixed reactions from political circles. The All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the campaign as lacking serious intent, with its spokesperson calling the proponents “clowns.”

Conversely, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State labelled the campaign as mere speculation, asserting that Governor Makinde has not declared any intention to run for the presidency.

Governor Makinde’s spokesperson, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, declined to comment on the matter, maintaining silence on the governor’s potential presidential ambitions.

Meanwhile, the PDP’s Publicity Secretary in Oyo State, Michael Ogunsina, confirmed that Makinde had not discussed any plans for the 2027 presidential election.

In contrast, the APC’s Publicity Secretary in Oyo State, Wasiu Sadare, acknowledged Makinde’s constitutional right to contest for the presidency but did not elaborate further.

Sadare said, “We can only wish him the best of luck since it is within his right to aspire to be President. The PDP has always lacked ideal candidates and we would not be surprised if their best presidential candidate for 2027 is Governor Makinde.

“We cannot wait for him to kick off his mobilisation efforts and it is then we would expose him to the whole world. As it stands now, we see those behind the project as clowns who lack the wherewithal to drive such ambition.”
