As the 2023 general elections approaches, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned all political parties against soliciting funds from outside Nigeria.
The electoral body’s National Commissioner, Festus Okoye had said on Channels TV that soliciting funds from outside Nigeria contravenes Section 225 of the Nigerian constitution which he quoted as “no registered political party in Nigeria shall possess any funds outside the country.”
Okoye furthered that in a case were any political party collects such funds, such political party has a constitutional and legal obligation to turn in such funds to INEC within a period of 21 days from the date of receipt of such funds.
He also added that no political party is allowed to receive money anonymously.
