Meanwhile, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Chelsea captain Reece James does not embody the traditional features of a captain.

Having been with Chelsea since the age of six, James was made captain at the start of the 2023-2024 season, following Cesar Azpilicueta’s departure.

While speaking on The Overlap, Scholes highlighted that while leadership can take different forms, James comes across as somewhat reserved.

He noted, “It’s important to have strong characters in such a large club like Chelsea. I see leadership as a quality that shines both on and off the pitch. Although Reece has the potential to lead, he may not have the presence typically associated with a captain. Similarly, I feel Cole Palmer might also not fit this leadership role.”
