As part of efforts to advocate for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, the Southeast Governors today suggested to the Federal Government that a political solution is still applicable to the situation.
Naija News learnt that the governors noted that despite the federal government’s stay of execution, they still believe a political solution can still be used to free Kanu.
The governor’s reaction follows the federal government’s refusal to obey the Appeal Court’s judgement that discharged the IPOB leader and dismissed the six-count charge preferred against him by the federal government.
Kanu’s freedom had been described by the federal government as a threat to national security.
Therefore it got a stay of execution from the Appeal Court, to still detain him while it appeals the ruling of the Supreme Court.
However, the Southeast Governors after their meeting in Enugu said they were monitoring the situation.
Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum and Ebonyi Governor, Dave Umahi, read the meeting’s communique to pressmen after the end of their gathering.
He said “We are watching with keen interest, the developments concerning the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu viz-a-viz the Court rulings.
“However, we believe that a political solution is still possible in this circumstance.”
The southwest governors at their forum also resolved that the federal government should assist them with the provision of security because the rate of insecurity in the area had really surged, adding that elections are also around the corner, hence the need to beef up security.
Umahi pointed out that the Governors also resolved to set up a 24-hour patrol team on all the major highways in the zone.
He added that southeast governors had decided to put funds together to further assist the victims of flooding in the region.
Present at the meeting were Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi(Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and David Umahi (Ebonyi) while the Governors of Anambra and Imo were represented by their deputies Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezi and Prof. Placid Njoku, respectively.
