Niger State government has announced it would distribute 50,000 metric tonnes of food at 50 percent discount that would be sold in designated areas of the state.
Governor Mohammed Bago, on Friday, said the designated locations would crisscross the 25 local government areas of the state.
Governor Bago said the foods were proceeds from the state’s dry season farming. He said the 50,000 metric tonnes of foods were supposed to be exported.
He added that the state government changed its export policy to ensure the residents of the state have food available amid high food inflation and economic hardship in the country.
“The 50,000MT of foods we are giving out at 50% discount to be sold in designated areas across the 25 Local Government Areas are from our dry season farming and they are initially meant for export; but we cannot export what we do not have, we have opened the stores of Niger State to feed Nigerlites,” Bago said on his X handle.
He called on residents of his state to shun the planned nationwide protest. He advised Niger State residents to pray for his administration to actualize its food sufficiency programme.
“This journey to prosperity and tranquility has challenges, but keep your faith strong. I am firm in my faith; I want you to be firm in your faith that Niger State will feed the nation.
“Our youths are obedient, reliable, and peaceful. We will not allow anybody to use us in our tranquility to cause problems in our state,” Governor Bago added.
