Michael Owen Explains Why Cristiano Ronaldo Is Worth £500 Million In His Prime

The former Liverpool and Manchester United player, Michael Owen believes that with the exceptional value Cristiano Ronaldo used to bring to a new club in his prime, he would have been worth £500 million in today’s transfer market.

Michael Owen argued that the 39-year-old Portuguese football icon was worth retiring as the most expensive player of all time by a significant margin.

Owen referred to Paris Saint-Germain’s record-breaking transfer of Neymar from Barcelona for £200 million in 2017, suggesting that Ronaldo’s value would far surpass that figure.

He emphasized that Ronaldo’s impact on clubs goes beyond his on-field performance, citing his influence on shirt sales, brand growth, and the significant financial benefits he brings to the clubs he represents.

In Owen’s view, even a £500 million price tag would undervalue the impact of Ronaldo’s goals, trophy contributions, and the overall financial benefit he brings to the clubs.

He suggested that a billion pounds would not be an unreasonable valuation for Ronaldo’s nine-season impact, highlighting the transformative influence the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has had on the clubs he’s been a part of.

“If you look at the transfer record now of over £200 million, you’d have to say Cristiano Ronaldo was worth more than that at Manchester United”, Michael Owen told Genting Casino.

“In hindsight, I think £500 million would be cheap. You could even double that if you look at the goals, trophies, the shirts, and how much clubs have benefited from having him there. How he’s grown their brand, how he’s won them trophies and made them all this money.

“I guess if you’d said to them at that point how much he would give you for nine seasons, they might say yes to a billion pounds, forget about £80 million. £500 million would be cheap.”

Note that Ronaldo, who said he could retire from professional football in the next two to three years, has played for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al Nassr so far in his illustrious football career.
