Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri has condemned the assault of Uduak Akpan, the first accused in the murder of a graduate of the University of Uyo, late Iniubong Umoren.
Naija News earlier reported that Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court had sentenced Akpan to death by hanging for the murder of Umoren.
The presiding judge also sentenced the accused to life imprisonment on the charge of rape preferred against him.
After the court ruling, Akpan attempted to escape being taken to prison but it took the intervention of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) officers and the police to stop him.
In a viral video, officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service were seen slapping and manhandling Akpan while he was being led to a waiting Black Maria van.
Reacting in a tweet via his verified Twitter handle, Omokri queried why the officers assaulted Akpan, adding that the convict cannot escape far and do any damage.
He wrote: “Uduak-Abasi Akpan resists being taken to prison after he was sentenced to death over Iniubong Umoren’s murder.
“But did they have to beat him? He is in handcuffs. How far can he go? What damage can he do?”
