As the governorship election continues in Imo state, voting has been temporarily halted at Polling Unit 018, Umunomu ward in Ehime Mbano Local Government.
Reports suggest that the suspension followed a clash between members of different political parties following allegations of vote-buying.
“Voting activities have been suspended at PU018, Umunomu ward, Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State due to suspected vote-buying, leading to a clash between members of different political parties,” reports made available to Naija News reporter read.
In the buildup to the off-cycle election, Naija News recalls that the commission expressed worries over a possible outbreak of violence in Kogi and Imo states.
While the security assessment detailed that the security threat in Kogi and Imo State was rife, it documented minimal violence in Bayelsa State.
Naija News had earlier reported that renowned civil society organisation, YIAGA had expressed worries over possible outbreak of violence in the buildup to the off-cycle election.
Expressing its concern in its pre-election statement, the CSO disclosed that it was worried about the obnoxious abuse of incumbency powers that manifested through restrictions of campaigns, the imposition of fines and levies on campaign posters, and attacks on political opponents.
The organisation worried that “The lack of accountability for the fatalities and attacks recorded in the pre-election period deepens the culture of impunity pervading the electoral process.”
