'I Think The Federal Government Made A Mistake' - Orji Kalu Speaks On Tinubu's Tax Reform Bills

Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has added his voice to the ongoing national debate on the tax reform bills initiated by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking during an interview on Arsie News, Kalu said the bill is very progressive, but the federal government made a mistake in not carrying stakeholders along.

According to him, the National Executive Council (NEC), the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, and the Council of State should all have been carried along in the tax reform bills.

Despite the identified mistake, Kalu was of the opinion that the bill would bring back fiscal federalism in Nigeria.

“As I told you before, the bill is very progressive. It will bring back fiscal federalism. Many senators have not been briefed. I think the federal government made a mistake. The initiators of the bills would have briefed the National Economic Council, Governors’ forum,” he said.

Naija News recalls President Tinubu had in October, forwarded four bills including the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, to the National Assembly for consideration and approval.

The bills, which have generated controversy among Nigerians, have already passed second reading at the Senate.
