Ukraine has received another massive support from Germany as the war against the Russian army gets tenser.
Germany has been reluctant to assist Ukraine following warnings and threats by the Russian government led by President Vladimir Putin, Naija News understands.
A statement, however, credited to Germany’s Defense Ministry on Tuesday, revealed the country has finally agreed to deliver anti-aircraft tanks to Ukraine.
The country had earlier shown interest in only providing humanitarian help and medical equipment to Ukraine.
The latest development has, however, shown a major shift in Germany’s approach to providing military help to Ukraine.
At a meeting of international defence officials at the Ramstein US Air Force base yesterday, Germany’s Defence Minister, Christine Lambrecht reportedly announced that the country will deliver the Gepard anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine.
“We decided yesterday that we will support Ukraine with anti-aircraft systems which is exactly what Ukraine needs now to secure the airspace from the ground,” Lambrecht reportedly said during the meeting at the base.
Germany defied Putin’s warning that said no such weapons should be provided to Ukraine.
The Russian government had threatened that any nation that assists Ukraine with such a weapon amid the ongoing war would face the consequences of such action.
The Gepard systems were phased out from active duty in Germany in 2010, Naija News understands.
