Marouane Fellaini gave the Red Devils a first half lead with a powerful header after meeting a sweet cross from former German international Bastian Schweinsteiger on the stroke of half-time.

United continued their dominance in the second half as Chris Smalling rose highest to head home from an Anthony Martial’s cross. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Bastian Schweinsteiger got in on the action as they scored the third and fourth respectively for Jose Mourinho’s men to take them into the round of 16.

The Red Devils had lost their 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions to Hull City in the second leg of the EFL Cup semifinal 2-1 but went through on a 3-2 aggregate after winning the first leg 2-0.

Wayne Rooney was presented with a special award for becoming Manchester United’s all-time topscorer from the man that he surpassed his record, Sir Bobby Charlton just before kick-off against Wigan.

The Red Devils dominated possession but it was the away side that had the first sniff of goal when Connolly on the edge of the area connected a knock down from Dan Burn and his vicious half-volley stings the palms Sergio Romero in goal for the home side.

However, just before the first half whistle Marouane Fellaini connected a cross from Bastian Schweinsteiger and powered a header past Jakob Haugaard.

In the second half, Manchester United turned on the style as they racked up the pressure on the away side with some slick passing moves and scintillating displays.

Anthony Martial showed off his blistering pace as he skipped past his marker and delivered a cross into the box which was met with a towering header from Chris Smalling.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho gave a debut to highly rated teenager Axel Tuanzebe as he replaced Dutch international Fosu-Mensah.

After wasting a couple of opportunities, Henrikh Mkhitaryan finally found himself among the goals as he led a devastating counter-attack – exchanged passes with Martial and finished past the Wigan goalkeeper with aplomb.

The fourth United goal was scored by crowd favourite Bastian Schweinsteiger and got the loudest cheer. Wayne Rooney’s corner was headed into his path by Ander Herrera and he made no mistake as he finished well from inside the box for his first goal of the season to end the game 4-0.
