UK Prosecutors have disclosed that former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice, were arrested on their way to Istanbul, Turkey.
Naija News earlier reported that Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested in London by the Specialist Crime Team of the UK Metropolitan Police for alleged conspiracy to harvest the organ of a child.
In a statement on Thursday, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the pair conspired to facilitate the travel of a child to the county in order to harvest the minor’s organ.
The police added that the investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.
However, the pair, who were charged before Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court following an investigation by the Uk Metropolitan Police, have been denied bail and remanded till July 7.
During their arraignment on Thursday at the Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, UK prosecutors said Ekweremadu and his wife were on their way to Turkey before they were arrested.
The prosecutors told the court that the couple was arrested at Heathrow airport by the UK Metropolitan Police after it got a credible intelligence, Arise TV said.
According to the prosecutors, it is believed that they were on their way to procure another organ as they were unable to harvest the organ of the boy.
The prosecutors were also said to have told the court that the couple has a daughter who has a kidney-related disease and has been on dialysis for quite some time.
They told the court that it is believed that the plan was to use an organ from the boy on their daughter who appears to need a kidney transplant.
