The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested two local government area chairmen in Kano State for allegedly sponsoring political violence and armed thuggery in the state.
The arrested persons are Bashir Kutama and Faizu Alfindiki, chairmen of Gwarzo and Kano municipal areas respectively.
Naija News understands a recent clash between the supporters of the two politicians resulted in their arrest by DSS operatives and the two politicians are currently under investigation by the secret police.
During the attack that resulted in their arrest, four persons were reportedly killed, while several others sustained injuries during a clash that occurred at the inauguration of officials of the APC for Kano southern senatorial zone in Rano.
Further information has it that the two local government chairmen are interested in succeeding Abdullahi Ganduje as the Kano State Governor.
A source at the DSS Kano command, who was quoted by The Cable to have spoken on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrest of the two chairmen and added that one adviser to Governor Ganduje was also arrested.
The source added that the chairman of Gwale local government area, Khalid Ishaq Diso is also facing the same allegation of sponsoring politcal violence.
“Yes, they have arrested Mr Faizu Alfindiki, the chairman of Kano municipal area and Bashir Abdullahi Kutama, chairman of Gwarzo local government area, over allegations of sponsoring highly-placed political thuggery in the state, culminating in attacks and subsequent killings,” the source said.
“The DSS has also placed Khalid Ishaq Diso, chairman of Gwale local government area, on the same allegations, while one adviser to the governor was also arrested by the security operatives on the same allegations.
“The DSS has commenced serious moves to check the ugly trend, which if allowed to continue, could set Kano ablaze even before the commencement of the 2023 general election.”
