The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has on Monday disclosed that a new date for the funeral of the late Mrs Omobolanle Raheem, who was allegedly killed by a police officer on Christmas Day would be communicated in due course.
Naija News reports that the association said it wants to schedule a special programme to honour the deceased who was a member of the group when she was alive.
It was gathered that the association’s National Publicity Secretary, Habeeb Lawal, said contrary to earlier dates picked by Raheem’s family, new dates for the funeral ceremonies would be communicated by the group soon following some sensitive discussions with her family.
This platform recalls that Raheem was a victim of extra-judicial killing as she was allegedly shot by a policeman in Ajah on Christmas Day when she was returning from an outing with her family.
The NBA in its statement said “Contrary to the earlier announcement released by the family of the late Bolanle Raheem, with regard to her burial arrangements, new dates will be announced soon. This is because of sensitive matters discussed with the family when a delegation, led by the NBA President, Y.C. Maikyau (SAN), visited the family.
“In addition, the NBA is planning a befitting event for lawyers to pay their last respect to their deceased colleague. This event will be championed by the NBA Lagos Branch and full details will be announced soon.”
The group has earlier requested that compensation of at least N5 billion should be given to the family of Raheem.
Naija News reported on December 29 2022 that the NBA Lagos Branch member and rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), in a statement said he was appointed to lead the monitoring team.
According to him, the trial of Assistant Superintendent, Drambi Vandi, who shot and killed Raheem in Lagos on Christmas Day would be closely monitored.
The NBA also called on the Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to adopt the same model he used during the EndSARS Judicial Panel to “Pay compensation to the family of Mrs Raheem immediately since it is an established fact that her life was terminated illegally by a policeman.”
