Biafra: IPOB Reacts To ECOWAS Court Judgement On Nnamdi Kanu’s Petition

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken a stand on the decision of the court of the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) which said its leader, Nnamdi Kanu failed to prove his allegations against the government of Nigeria.

The ECOWAS Court in a judgment on Wednesday read by Justice Dupe Atoki, stressed that it had no reason to conclude that his arrest and detention were unlawful and arbitrary as claimed.

Kanu had filed a suit marked ECW/CCJ/APP/06/16 before the court on March 3, 2016 alleging torture, assault, inhuman treatment, and the violation of his property rights by the Federal Government.

Naija News earlier reported that the three-member panel of the Court sitting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Wednesday, December 11, also dismissed Kanu’s request for monetary compensation.

Though the Court acknowledged that Kanu had the legal capacity to approach it to seek redress for any violation of his human rights, it, however, held that without a mandate, he lacked the legal personality to represent the IPOB before the Court.

Reacting to the court judgement in a statement on Thursday, IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, described it as compromised.

IPOB has been championing a secessionist agenda for the Biafra nation and has been involved in several clashes with the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria finally resulting in its proscription by the Buhari led administration.
