Organisers of the National Peace Committee in Owerri, the Imo state capital, excluded candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Hope Uzodinma, Athan Achonu of the Labour Party (LP) and Tony Ejiogu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) from signing the peace accord for all the governorship candidates in the state, ahead of the November 11 governorship election in the state.
Naija News learnt that Governor Uzodinma, Achonu and Ejiogu were all absent as they sent their running mates, but the organisers of the ceremony did not allow them to sign the peace accord, insisting documents would not be signed by candidates not proxies.
The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Samuel Anyanwu, who came for the meeting, later left over the absence of the candidates of other major political parties.
The candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Bright Ekwebelem, Action Democratic Party (ADP), Steve Nwoga, Action Alliance (AA), Jack Ogunewe and other candidates were present and signed the peace accord.
Uzodinma’s running mate, Chinyere Ekomaru, who was not allowed to sign the peace accord, left after the party chairman, Macdonald Ebere, signed the dotted lines.
Similarly, Achonu’s running mate, Tony Nwulu, was not allowed to sign on behalf of Achonu, his party chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa, signed.
The running mate of the PDP candidate, Jones Onyereri, was also not allowed to sign the peace accord document after Anyanwu left.
Organisers of the ceremony announced that the candidates who missed the event could come to the office of the state Commissioner of Police to sign the documents on Thursday.
Speaking with journalists, the running mate of the PDP candidate, Onyereri, said Anyanwu left because he had other engagements and asked him to stay back.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission not to compromise the electoral process, adding that it would make nonsense of the peace accord.
