Ohanaeze Wants A Return Of Bakassi Boys
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Worldwide has called on governors from the South-East region of the country to bring back the ‘Bakassi Boys’ as the security outfit for the region.
The group made the call on Thursday where it noted that other regions already have a security outfit for their zone.
It listed the Civilian JTF and Hisbah Police for the north and the recently established Operation Amotekun in the South-West.
The group, therefore, in a statement issued and signed by the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths Worldwide, Okechukwu Isiguzoro and the Secretary, Okwu Nnabuike and made available to newsmen, called on governors of the South East forum led by David Umahi of Ebonyi state to bring back the “BAKASSI BOYS.”
The statement reads thus: “Ohanaeze Youth Council Worldwide want to use this medium to appeal to governors of the South East forum to reinstate the proscribed BAKASSI BOYS vigilant group as our own security outfit.
“This is as a result of the ongoing formation of community policing in other regions of the country, of recent was Amotekun by governors of the South West.
“Again, in the North, the Civilian JTF and Hisbah Police are already there, so ours should not be different. Beside, the return of BAKASSI BOYS will make south east the most secure region in Nigeria,” it explained.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Worldwide, however, warned in its statement against the politicization of the Bakassi Boys, noting that this was responsible for the crash of the outfit initially.
It said “this challenge can be overcome if operational guidelines, adequate funding are made available in partnership with the federal government and Nigerian security operatives supervising their activities.
“The funding should not come from southeast governors alone but the federal government as well. Also, security operatives should always monitor and supervise their activities”, it noted.
