Aminu Muhammad, the student arrested for insulting the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, was arraigned in court on Tuesday, and he has already been sent to prison.
Naija News recalls that Adamu, a student of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, was arrested by plainclothed security operatives for tweeting about Aisha’s weight.
The student’s lawyer, CK Agu, confirmed to the BBC Hausa that his client was arraigned before the Federal Capital Territory High Court No. 14. He pleaded not guilty to the crime he was accused of.
His lawyer had requested the court to grant him bail on the grounds of ill health and that he’s expected to start his final exams on December 5.
Naija News understands that the hearing started on Tuesday and it will continue tomorrow to consider the request to grant him bail.
When the lawyer was asked where Aminu is at the moment, he said, “He is currently being held in Suleja prison before the bail application is heard.”
According to his uncle, Shehu Baba-Azare, the police did not notify the family about the arraignment.
“It’s clearly a secret arraignment because they did not inform us. We are very concerned about his situation. He will sit for his final exam on December 5,” Baba-Azare said.
Amnesty International on Monday condemned the decision to arrest Muhammad, noting a case of human rights violation.
As of the time this report was written, the first lady and the security forces have not said a word on this issue.
The detention of Aminu Muhammad, who is a student at the Federal University in Dutse in Jigawa State, has caused a stir, especially on social media, where many people accused Mrs Buhari for his arrest and detention.
