Agbakoba Drags Buhari’s Minister To Court

Human Rights lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba has filed a Suit to stop allocation of public funds to unelected and unaccountable Local Government Councils, running into Trillions of Naira.

Naija News understands that Agbakoba noted that the basis of the Case is that Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution guarantees a system of democratically elected Government Councils. But said Local Government Councils in Nigeria are never elected and are unconstitutional.

Agbakoba said that the allocation of public funds to local government is a violation of the Constitution, as there is collusion with State Governments in the use of trillions of Naira of Public Funds, PM News reports.

He also attributed the widespread of corruption in Nigeria to unelected persons that are not accountable to the electorate receiving trillions of Naira of Public Funds.

While backing up Agbakoba’s case, the Nigerian Finance Intelligence Unit (NFIU), has put in place guidelines aimed at directing State Governors and Local Governments to follow the Constitution regarding disbursement of Local Government funds; this comes despite the federal government’s denial of the case.
