Afrobeats Singers Don’t Like Stress – Flavour

Nigerian highlife singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has stated that Afrobeats music lacks depth.

He said this while reacting to Jamaican reggae icon, Buju Banton’s submission on Afrobeats.

Naija News recalls that Banton sparked controversy after claiming in an interview that Afrobeats music is “f*ckery.”

He said that Afrobeats had no substance and would fade with time.

Reacting, Flavour agreed with Banton’s take on the music genre.

Speaking in a recent episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Flavour said Banton was on point.

According to him, Afrobeats lacks depth because its artists are lazy.

I understand what Buju Banton is trying to say. Kids of today [present crop of afrobeats artists] don’t want stress; they just want to vibe.

“Maybe Buju Banton is trying to awaken our spirit,” he said.

‘I’m Not An Afrobeat Artiste’ – Flavour

Meanwhile, Flavour has disclosed he does not identify as an Afrobeat artiste.

Naija News reports that Flavour, while speaking in an episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, said he creates “African music”, and his contributions are rooted in a broader representation of African sounds.

The singer said he is not credited for the global rise of African music but does not feel slighted about it.

He said his contributions to music would be recognised more if the focus were on African music rather than just one genre.

Flavour also criticised the media for narrowing the narrative around African music to just Afrobeats and neglecting other genres.

He said, “I do not feel bad when I am not given credit for the global rise of African music because what the media is talking about is Afrobeats. I am not an Afrobeats artiste.

“What I am doing is African music. There are guys like Fally Ipupa, Diamond Platinumz who are pushing African music globally that are not Afrobeats artistes.

“Most times, the media just talks about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, of course, you should mention my name.”
