With 18 governorship candidates from various political parties competing to assume the seat of the next governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel has a preferred candidate he wants to succeed him, as the state governor in the 2023 election.
In Nigeria, the choice of preferred candidate has remained a norm by incumbent governors, notwithstanding the past record of the person.
In this article, Naija News takes a look at the four major contestants in the March 11th election.
1. Umo Bassey Eno: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate is a cleric and the current Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources in the state.
Eno started his career in the banking sector and worked for some multinational companies in Nigeria before joining politics.
He has served in several positions, including Chairman of the Akwa Ibom Hotels and Tourism Board from 2004 to 2007.
2. Obong Akan Udofia: All Progressives Congress candidate is a seasoned entrepreneur and consultant.
Although he does not have any record of serving in political office, he has held several Executive and Non-Executive leadership positions in various sectors of the Nigerian economy, including Real Estate, Maritime, and Oil and Gas specializing in Engineering, procurement, Construction, and Installation
3. John Akpan Udoedehe: New Nigeria Peoples Party candidate, was elected Chairman of the Uyo Local Government. In 1999, he ran for the Uyo Senatorial District on the PDP platform and was elected and held office until May 2003.
After taking his seat in the Senate, Udo-Edehe was appointed part of committees on Industry, Labour, Finance & Appropriation, Internal Affairs, Information, Privatization (chairman), and Government Affairs. He was also the chairman of Godswill Akpabio’s successful campaign for Akwa Ibom governorship in 2006/2007.
In 2015 Senator Udoedehe ran for the gubernatorial election but was defeated by Obong Umana Okon Umana, in the primaries election. In March 2020 John was issued an appointment as a Board member Nigerian Ports Authority.
4. Bassey Albert: Young Progressives Party candidate, has been a member of the Senate of Nigeria since June 2015 and won re-election for a second time in the February 2019 senatorial elections. He was previously the Commissioner of Finance in Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2014.
