Former Kogi Senator, Dino Melaye has tackled President Muhammadu Buhari over an appeal made to Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to be allowed to choose his successor.
Melaye on Wednesday, described the move as dictatorial, unconstitutional, and undemocratic, calling on Nigerians to resist such action as it is an attempt to impose a leader on them in 2023.
The former lawmaker said Nigerians must wake up and defend their hard-earned democracy against any form of attack.
It will be recalled that President Buhari during a meeting on Tuesday with the APC Governors ahead of the ruling party’s presidential primaries, pleaded that he should be allowed to pick his successor.
President Buhari said state governors were given the opportunity to pick their successor, hence he should be given the same privilege at the federal level.
“In keeping with the established internal policies of the Party and as we approach the Convention in a few days, therefore, I wish to solicit the reciprocity and support of the Governors and other stakeholders in picking my successor, who would fly the flag of our party for election into the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023.
“We gave governors re-election tickets or opportunity to pick their successors; allow me pick my successor,” he was quoted to have said during the meeting.
But Melaye in his reaction via a Twitter post said the use of the word successor and not flag bearer or candidate is an attempt to impose the next President on Nigerians which would be firmly resisted.
He accused Buhari of trying to force his will on all Nigerians but said such will not be allowed as Nigeria must be rescued.
