Nigeria Moves Up Four Places In Latest TI Ranking
Nigeria made progress, moving up four places in the Transparency International corruption perception index (CPI) for 2018, according to the latest report released on Tuesday morning.
Of the 180 countries that were surveyed last year, Nigeria is ranked 144 – representing an upward movement of four places compared to the 148 out of 180 ranking in 2017.
In terms of total score, the country’s mark, however, remained the same for the two years at 27/100.
Recall that in 2016, the country scored 28/100 and was ranked 136th.
In a statement obtained by Naija News which was released along with the 2018 report on Tuesday morning, Patricia Moreira, managing director of Transparency International, said there is the need “to do more to strengthen checks and balances and protect citizens’ rights” with many democratic institutions “under threat across the globe”.
“Corruption chips away at democracy to produce a vicious cycle, where corruption undermines democratic institutions and, in turn, weak institutions are less able to control corruption,” she added.
The report also warned, “that the continued failure of most countries to significantly control corruption is contributing to a crisis of democracy around the world.”
