The Federal Government has revealed why it recalled the Nigerian envoy to South Africa.
FG stated that it is recalling the country’s High Commissioner in South Africa for consultation, over the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in the country.
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, revealed this during Channels Television’s live programme “Politics Today”.
The minister reiterated the position of his Foreign Affairs counterpart, Geoffrey Onyema, that the high commissioner’s recall for consultation would be after the President’s Special Envoy has returned from South Africa.
He noted that with all effort of President Muhammadu Buhari to deal with the attacks, he had dispatched a special envoy to convey to his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, his concern and interact with him.
Mohammed also stated that President Buhari would be addressing Nigerians after the return of the special envoy to South Africa.
He added that the plan to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa is a private initiative, which was welcomed by the federal government.
The minister said besides boycotting the World Economic Forum on Africa being hosted by South Africa, the government is considering other measures to keep Nigerians in South Africa safe.
Mohammed called on Nigerians not to resort to a reprisal attack by attacking South African businesses in Nigeria.
