Can Nigeria Follow Suit As Italy Reduces Number Of Senators To Save Cost

The Italian legislative arm has voted in agreement to reduce the number of senators and lawmakers in the country by 37percent.

Naija News understands that the parliamentary body agreed to this yesterday during the parliamentary seating where the bill for reductions passed with 553 votes in favour, 14 against, and two abstentions.

With each MP and senator said to be earning €230,000 and €249,600 respectively annually, the cut is expected to save Italy about €82 million every year.

Five Star Movement, the main party in Italy’s governing coalition which had promised the cut, was quoted as saying the measure will streamline parliament and save an estimated €1 billion.

It will be recalled that Senator Rochas Okorocha recently advocated for the scrapping of the House of Representatives in order to conserve some funds currently been spent on legislators in the country.

Meanwhile, Naija News recalls that President Buhari of Nigeria during the 2020 budget presentation yesterday revealed that a total of 125 billion naira was allocated to the Nigerian Legislative arm.
