The Senator representing Abia-North Senatorial District, Orji Uzor Kalu, who was convicted of #7.6bn fraud charges and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment has pleaded with the court to grant his a post-conviction bail.
The former Governor of Abia State in an application filed before the court on Tuesday stated that he is battling with health challenges that cannot be handled by the medical facilities in the prison.
He noted that since the offenses he was convicted of were bailable offenses, the court should grant him bail while he appeals against the ruling of Justice Mohammed Idris at the Court of Appeal.
Kalu further stated that as the Chief Whip of the Senate and the senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, the interest of his people would be affected if he is kept behind bars.
The bail plea by the former governor was opposed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
