Residents of Baruwa Estate in the Ipaja area of Lagos State have expressed disappointment over the decision of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) not to supply the area with electricity.
Naija News gathered that residents of the area have not had electricity since last week Wednesday.
A resident who spoke to our correspondent claimed that IKEDC refused to supply power to the area because some residents had defaulted in the payment of their electricity bill.
Some residents see the move as a way of punishing the whole area for the sins of a few individuals.
This online news platform reports that houses with prepaid meters are also currently suffering the prolonged outage.
Residents called on the Lagos State Government to prevail on IKEDC to restore power to the community.
An official of IKEDC, who does not want her name mentioned, confirmed to Naija News that the company cut off electricity supply to the area because of poor payment.
She urged residents to pay up outstanding bills, stressing that the whole area would remain in darkness if those yet to pay don’t comply.
The comment by the IKEDC official contradicts a statement released by the company on May 4th that claimed they did not disconnect customers during the coronavirus lockdown.
