Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will, on Thursday, depart Abuja on a day trip to Accra, the Ghanaian capital.

The vice president is expected to attend an Extraordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Accra.

Naija News reports that the meeting is coming amid coups in African countries. In the past 18 months, four coups have taken place in West Africa.

In a statement on Thursday, the spokesman for the vice president, Laolu Akande, said Osinbajo will join other West African leaders to deliberate on the political situation in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.

Akande stated that the meeting is part of the resolutions reached during last week’s virtual meeting chaired by ECOWAS President and President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo.

According to Akande, the leaders will be considering imposing additional sanctions after Burkina Faso was suspended from the regional body last week.

He added that the meeting will review the report of the ECOWAS delegation despatched to Quagadougou to meet with the military junta who recently seized power in the West African country.

The vice president will be accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zubairu Dada; Presidential Special Adviser on Economic Matters, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu and other top Nigerian diplomats.

Akande disclosed that Osinbajo would return to Abuja later today.
