The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police on Tuesday confirmed an attack by hoodlums on Dangote Refinery in the state.
According to the Police, one of the hoodlums who attacked the facility located at the Lekki Free Trade Zone was killed when operatives engaged them in a gun battle while nineteen others escaped.
The attack occurred on Monday according to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin.
According to him, the hoodlums who attempted to steal already-installed armoured cables had gained entrance into the refinery through the lagoon side.
“Security operatives in the early hours of yesterday Monday, March 28, 2022, foiled an attempted attack on Dangote Refinery, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos,” Hundeyin said in the statement titled, ‘Police Foil Attack On Dangote Refinery.’
“Armed hoodlums numbering about twenty who gained access to the refinery through the lagoon side were repelled while attempting to cart away already-installed armoured cables in the refinery.
“The hoodlums on sighting security operatives fled the scene. One of the hoodlums was hit in the ensuing gunfire and died on the way to the hospital.
“Investigation has commenced with a view to arresting the fleeing attackers.”
The Police spokesperson added that the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has directed that security at the refinery be increased.
