The details of the meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina have emerged.
Naija News had reported that the president met with the former Minister of Agriculture at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday.
In a statement released after the meeting by the presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina said both leaders discussed the food security for the country.
Adesina said the president commended the AfDB for embarking on the $1.5 billion African Emergency Food plan, which is awaiting ratification by its bank’s board.
The president said the federal government was aware of the need for food security in the country and the need to encourage local farmers to plant what Nigerians would eat.
Buhari said: “We are very much aware of the need for food security, and to encourage our local farmers, that was why we closed our borders for about two years to curb smuggling. We made some progress.”
Reacting, the AfDB boss also informed the President of the bank’s prediction that Africa will lose $11 billion worth owing to a fertiliser crisis expected to diminish food production by about 20 percent.
Meanwhile, former Senate president and presidential aspirant Bukola Saraki has promised the people of Cross River to take the economic development of the state to the next level when he becomes president.
Saraki, who made the pledge during an official visit to the PDP delegates in Calabar, took to his Twitter page to post updates on the visit.
The former Kwara Governor promised to empower more youths and women in the state.
Saraki had declared his intention to run for President in January 2022 via a Facebook post after his various followers demanded that he made his position known.
