Professor Yahaya Ibrahim Makarfi has been confirmed as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Katsina State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) approved Makarfi for the position months after the expiration of the tenure of the former REC, Jibrin Zarewa, Naija News reports.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement signed and made available to newsmen on Thursday by the Head of the Department, Voters’ Education and Publicity, Shehu Sa’idu.
Meanwhile, the Administrative Secretary had been overseeing the commission’s affairs since Zarewa’s departure in August 2022.
Makarfi was until the latest development the Director of Academic Planning at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and also served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Environmental Design and Quantity Survey Department.
Naija News understands that the Katsina new REC made his first appearance in office for the position on Monday, 7 November 2022.
He was received by the Administrative Secretary, Isah Magaji Gummi, in the company of other staff, at the state headquarter of the commission.
Prof. Makarfi was among the 19 new Resident Electoral Commissioners sworn in on 3 November 2022 by the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, after passing the mandatory Senate screening and final approval of the appointments by President Muhammad Buhari.
