Youth Leader, Others Face Charges Following Attack On Rivers Assembly Speaker’s Residence

The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, Chijioke Ihunwo, and several other young people who were detained on Wednesday are presently being tried at the Rivers State High Court, according to reports by Channels TV.

Naija News had earlier reported that the state Police Command had arrested Ihunwo alongside other youths who attacked the speaker’s home.

The young protestors were taken into custody after they made an attempt to break into the home of Martin Amaewhule, the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

It was reported that the young people were attempting to break into the Port Harcourt home and demanding the removal of Amaewhule, arguing that he was no longer the Speaker.

Further information revealed that the young people disregarded the security personnel’s opposition and tried entering the building more than once before the personnel fired into the air to scatter them, injuring a number of people in the process.

The protesters were detained at a police station near the speaker’s home.

The arrest was confirmed by the Rivers Police Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, who explained that the youngsters proceeded to attack the speaker in his residence and attempted to knock down the gate.

The new development follows the continuing political conflict between Governor of Rivers, Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike.
