CAF Awards: Two Nigerian Male Footballers, Four Women Named In CAF XI

Six Nigerian footballers were named in the 2024 CAF Men’s and Women’s XI during the annual CAF Awards held in Marrakesh, Morocco on Monday, December 16.

The Super Falcons quartet—Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Asisat Oshoala were named in the CAF Women’s XI, while Super Eagles duo Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen, were named in the men’s eleven.

Alozie and Ohale secured their spots in a three-player defense for the women’s XI, while the acclaimed 2023 CAF Player of the Year, Osimhen, joined Lookman in a formidable front three on the men’s team.

While Rasheedat Ajibade was on the initial nomination list for women’s player of the year, her fellow countrywomen Oshoala, Alozie, and Ohale were recognized in the team of the year for their exceptional performances at both club and national levels throughout the year.

Even though Osimhen was not nominated for this year’s Player of the Year award, his consistent excellence for club and country has certainly been acknowledged.

The men’s team featured Andre Onana from Manchester United and Cameroon in goal, with Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly, and DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba forming a solid three-man defense.

The midfield consisted of Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus, Sofyan Amrabat from Morocco, Franck Kessie representing Ivory Coast, and Mali’s Yves Bissouma, while Egypt’s Mohamed Salah completed the attack alongside Lookman and Osimhen.

In the women’s XI, Chiamaka Nnadozie, who received the award for best female goalkeeper on the continent, was snubbed for South Africa’s Andile Dlamini in the CAF Women’s XI.

Joining Ohale and Alozie in the defense was another South African player, Karabo Dhlamini. The women’s lineup also included South African duo Lebohang Ramalepe and Linda Mothalo, as well as Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebback and Zambia’s Barbra Banda.
