Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim has blamed his team’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on the set pieces which his team failed to defend.
In a tightly contested Premier League match held at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night, December 4, Arsenal came out victorious thanks to goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba, both of which came from corner kicks.
This defeat marked United’s first loss under Amorim’s management, a result that left him reflecting on his team’s performance and strategies in the match.
Amorim explained that the execution of set pieces was a significant factor that tilted the game in favor of Arsenal.
“The set pieces changed the game,” he stated during his interview with Match of the Day. “We could’ve been more aggressive towards the Arsenal box. Up until the set pieces, there weren’t many clear-cut chances for either side, and it was the set pieces that ultimately dictated the flow of the match.”
He further elaborated on his team’s approach, emphasizing their commitment and effort during the game. “We were dedicated to our plan, but we fell short because of the set pieces. Although we aimed to maintain possession and create opportunities, Arsenal proved to be a very organized side, making it difficult to find a way through.
“I felt that, for the most part, my players had the game under control, but the set pieces turned everything around after halftime.”
