Augustine Eguavoen Aims To Qualify Nigeria For 2025 CHAN Against Ghana

Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has acknowledged the challenge that awaits his team when they face Libya in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Super Eagles’ caretaker coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has expressed his determination to lead the team to secure a spot at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The Super Eagles face the daunting challenge of competing against their longtime rivals, Ghana, in a qualification match for the tournament, which is specifically designed for footballers currently playing in their respective domestic leagues.

In recent years, Nigeria has struggled to overcome Ghana in the qualifying rounds, having been thwarted by the Black Stars on two occasions—once in 2009 and again in 2022. These previous defeats have only intensified the rivalry between the two nations and heightened the stakes for this upcoming encounter.

In an interview with NFF TV, Eguavoen expressed enthusiasm that this time, the outcome will differ from past experiences. He acknowledged the fierce nature of the competition when facing Ghana, stating, “Any category in which we meet the Ghanaian team is always very tough. All we pray for is luck.”

He emphasized the importance of preparation and resilience, assuring fans that the team would approach the matches with a strong work ethic and carefully developed strategies aimed at securing their advancement to the tournament.

“For the game, we will go out there and work hard and develop strategies to ensure we are in the next CHAN”, he said.

On the quality of the house-based Super Eagles players, Augustine Eguavoen added, “Very impressive, only two training sessions, but you can see that technically they are very good.

“We still have a lot of work to do because they are coming from different clubs. We have to try to see how we can blend them into one unit.”

The crucial two-legged qualifying contest is scheduled to take place in December. The overall winners will earn the opportunity to participate in CHAN 2025, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
