Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso, is confident that Victor Boniface has even more potential to showcase as he urged him to be as aggressive as Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba.
Victor Boniface has proven himself to be the top goal scorer for Die Werkself since joining the club last summer.
The formidable Nigerian striker secured the winning goal in the reigning Bundesliga champions’ 1-0 triumph over AC Milan in a UEFA Champions League match at the BayArena on Tuesday night.
Boniface capitalized on a rebound from Mike Maignan after the goalkeeper had deflected Jeremie Frimpong’s shot. This marked his first goal in the competition.
Despite Boniface’s impressive performances for Leverkusen, Alonso has urged him to exhibit greater assertiveness.
Alonso remarked, “He (Boniface) possesses numerous qualities that could make him as formidable as Drogba. Drogba was powerful and caused difficulties for defenders. He needs to cultivate his strengths.
“He excels with the ball in tight spaces and enjoys being near the box. At times, he needs to position himself closer to the box and demonstrate more aggression in attack, such as when he scored a goal that was disallowed today. It’s a developmental process; we need to support him, encourage him, and guide him to make better decisions when operating in open spaces.”
Meanwhile, Victor Boniface has expressed his elation after scoring for the first time in the UEFA Champions League.
“As a striker, it’s crucial to score in every game, not just in the Champions League but in every game. We strive to give our best in every match – be it in the league, cup, or Champions League,” he told TNT Sports.
“I’m delighted to have scored my first goal in the Champions League, and I feel immensely proud of myself.”
Note that Victor Boniface has netted four goals in total across all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen this season.
