Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani on Friday defeated six men to grab the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State.
Naija News reports that that victory has made her the first female gubernatorial candidate of the APC for the 2023 election.
Announcing the results in Yola, the state capital, the election committee chairman, Malam Gambo said Binani pulled a total of 430 votes while Nuhu Ribadu, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), came second with 288 votes.
A former governor, Muhammadu Jibrilla Bindow, came third with 103 votes, Abdurrazaq Namda polled 94 votes while Wafari Theman got 39 votes.
Other aspirants, Umar Mustapha Madawaki and Wafarniyi Theman respectively clinched fifth and sixth positions in the contest.
Who is Senator Binani?
Binani is the senator representing the Adamawa Central zone and she had previously served as a member of the House of Representatives for Yola North/Yola South/Girei Federal Constituency.
Born Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed on 11 August 1971, She is a member of the APC.
She was formerly a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where she contested an won a seat in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015 before decamping.
Aishatu, who has a Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, is currently the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She is married to Professor Ahmed Moddibo with kids and was born to Alhaji Dahiru and Hajiya Aishatu Utiya Dahiru.
In March 2020, she was honoured with the chhieftaincy title of ‘Gimbiyar Adamawa.’
