The Ebonyi State Police Command on Saturday attempted to disrupt a one million march rally staged by the supporters of presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, at the Pastoral Centre, Abakaliki with teargas.
The one-million-man march, which was organized by the supporters of the former Anambra state governor in Ebonyi, was disrupted when operatives of the Nigeria’ police fired tear gas to disperse the youths who had gathered.
Peter Obi’s supporters were numbered over 1,000 when the police intruded, the Punch reports
The incident reportedly caused both human and vehicular traffic on the popular Old Enugu Road, in the capital city, on Saturday morning.
One of the supporters who witnessed the incident, Steve Ugama, disclosed that over five other supporters were arrested by the police after they teargassed the crowd.
He further lamented that the treatment meted to the supporters, who were having a peaceful rally, was undemocratic and inhuman.
He said, “This is inhuman and undemocratic. We have gathered here this morning for our peaceful March, all of a sudden, the police came and started tear-gassing us and arresting our people.
“They said we can’t hold the march, because Governor David Umahi asked them to stop us, that we can’t hold it. About four or our colleague have been arrested. We need help here.”
